Dr. Paul Farmer at the Senate Foreign Relations Comittee

Dr. Paul Farmer, co-founder of Partners in Health, addressed the committee last Wednesday concerning the opportunities and pitfalls facing reconstruction and development in Haiti in the aftermath of the earthquake.

Building back better

Dr. Farmer emphasized that, in order to avoid the failures and abuses of the past, "Haiti will continue to need the contractors, and the NGOs and mission groups, but more importantly we will need to create new ground rules—including a focus on creating local jobs for Haitians, and on building the infrastructure that is crucial to creating sustainable economic growth and ultimately reducing Haiti’s dependence on aid."
